Lyceum of the Philippines University
Lyceum of the Philippines University is named after lykeion, the grove in ancient Athens where Aristotle taught his pupils, and was founded by Jose P. Laurel in 1952. He was a philosopher, educator, and former President of the Republic. Veritas et fortitudo, Pro Deo et Patria sum up the Lyceum's higher ideals.
LPU offers tourism and hospitality management programs at its four campuses. These are in Intramuros Manila, Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna. There are around 14,000 students in the TH&E programs across all its campuses, making it the biggest Tourism and Hospitality Management university in the country and in Asia.
Outstanding achievements include CHED: University, Autonomous status, Institutional Quality Assurance through Monitoring and Evaluation Category A – Teaching (IQuAME A-t), Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program deputised institution and the Center of Development for Hotel and Restaurant Management (Manila) and Tourism (Batangas), and Center of Excellence for HRM (Batangas). Tourism and Hospitality School
LPU offers the following programs: Bachelor of Science in International Travel and Tourism Management and BS in International Hospitality Management with the following specialisations: Hotel and Restaurant Administration, Culinary Arts and Kitchen Operations, Cruise Line Operations in Hotel Services and Cruise Line Operations in Culinary Arts, Health and Wellness.
LPU has a working agreement with the leading hotel-brand in Thailand the Dusit Thani Public Company Ltd since December 2008. The agreement includes curricula design and instructional material development assistance, support in refreshment training for faculty, laboratory and classroom facilities enhancement, with an end view of defining quality standards that meet international standards.
An additional agreement was signed with Dusit Thani December 2009 to provide practicum training for LPU students, and faculty immersion opportunities.
The current programs integrate the core values of LPU, as well as puts a premium on the seven learning outcomes - including communication skills, computer literacy, creative & analytical thinking, information retrieval, evaluation teamwork & leadership, entrepreneurial skills, and proactive & spiritual values - aside from the competencies that meet local and international standards in the various tourism and hospitality sectors.
Exceeding the minimum requirements mandated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), all campuses provide the same curricula for all TH&E programs, except for one or two general education subjects that are required by the region. The professional and specialized subjects have been designed specifically to develop competencies required by the industry.
Faculty members meet the academic and work experience required to teach a particular subject. The curriculum is defined in outcomes based education. There are various teaching techniques used such as simulation, laboratory activities, field trips, and a 1000 hour practicum training requirement in three areas specified by each program.
The students are given actual work-life experiences during their internship, through a strong collaboration with local and international companies, agencies and institutions.
Facilities meet international standards where student - teacher ratio is 1:25 for laboratory classes, and 1:40 for lecture classes. LPU's Research and Training Hotel, The Bayleaf Intramuros, is located in Manila and allows the students’ immersion opportunities as well as practicum training.
Research & Industry Programmes
LPU’s commitment to research undertakings is embodied in its objectives, and supported by the creation of the Research, Publications and Innovation Center that directs its research agenda in the various campuses. Research activities stimulate knowledge creation, exchange and sharing with various stakeholders through paper presentations in local and international research conferences, publications in national and international refereed journals, and written creations of books, textbooks, manuals and articles.
Funding is sourced either through internal grants or external funds from government and/or private institutions. With research becoming an increasingly important criterion in local and international accreditations, certification and quality assurance programs, LPU Management supports faculty members in various research activities through financial support, de-loading and evaluation premium points for tenure that attract a good number of faculty members.
