Dr Nerilee Hing
The Australian club, hotel and casino sectors face significant issues regarding the social impacts of gambling

Dr Nerilee Hing is a leading specialist in gambling studies, with particular expertise in the areas of gambling policy, management and operations. Her secondary academic interests include small business management and strategic management.

“The Australian club, hotel and casino sectors face significant issues regarding the social impacts of gambling, problem gambling and their social responsibilities,” Dr Hing said.

“The emphasis of my work is on providing empirical analysis that can form the basis of government and industrial policy surrounding responsible conduct in gambling, and to ensure that these findings are built upon in our education system”.

A key contribution that Dr Hing has made to gambling education is the establishment of the Centre for Gambling Education and Research (CGER) at Southern Cross University (SCU). Dr Hing has individually and collaboratively attracted $890 000 in funding for research during her academic career at Southern Cross University.

Dr Hing has published an extensive range of resources for industry and education, including refereed articles, books, conference papers and keynote addresses in areas including gambling problems, the club industry, machine gambling, female gambling, gambling education and gambling advertising. Outside the gambling sector, her research has also explored service quality and hospitality trends. She co-wrote the first Australian text about club management and has written 21 study units for SCU’s undergraduate and masters programs.

Dr Hing collaborates closely with a range of industry bodies including Clubs NSW, the Club Managers’ Association Australia, the Casino Community Benefit Fund, Queensland Treasury, the Australian Institute of Gambling Research and the Australian Gaming Council. She is a member of the Independent Review Panel for the Victorian Gambling Research Grants Scheme and sits on the editorial board for three key academic journals - International Gambling Studies, Gaming Research and Review and the Journal of Business and Social Inquiry.
