Hertzel Herrera from the Philippines won the TAFE NSW - North Sydney Institute (NSI) and The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE) International Student Ambassador Scholarship for 2009. Since commencing the Diploma in Event Management at NSI Hertzel has settled in very well. Before coming to study in Australia Hertzel from Pampanga in the Philippines worked as a Café Supervisor and instructor, teaching Introduction to Hospitality Management and Food Safety Sanitisation.

Hertzel was delighted to have been selected to study at NSI and is impressed with the excellent facilities at NSI and the friendliness of the staff. Hertzel said "The Event Industry is a growth industry and I would like to become a pioneer in this field in the Philippines, I plan to be a Wedding Event Coordinator and work in 5 Star Hotels coordinating corporate and social events".

In addition to her studies, Hertzel plans to undertake some of the short courses also on offer at NSI. These include Wine Studies at the Sydney Wine Academy (NSI) and Barista Training Course at the Sydney Coffee Academy (NSI).

Hertzel’s home town Pampanga has a well developed tourism industry. “The native food is beautiful, and the Philippino’s have a passion for the taste of good food” she said. “Sydney is very much the same, and I am enjoying my weekends in the city trying out lots of different food tastes at the different restaurants. Sydney is very multicultural”. Hertzel also really enjoyed a Majestic Twilight Cruise on Sydney Harbour recently and now has an opportunity to work part-time on the cruise boat.
